Better Business with Job Quality” – A Competition Launched by the NEP

(2012-2013)

Background

The National Employment Pact (NEP)supports Egyptian companies to improve the quality of jobs and working conditions. By improving job quality, companies get better access to suitable workforce and simultaneously contribute to improving the employment situation in Egypt. In addition, companies can benefit significantly from the positive effects of enhanced job quality, like improved staff motivation and morale, lower staff turnover, enhanced productivity and competitiveness, more reliable business partnerships and better worker-manager communication.

Objective and Framework

The competition “Better Business with Job Quality” (2012-2013) aimed to invite Egyptian small and mediums enterprises to develop and implement projects that improve job quality in their companies.

Egyptian companies were encouraged to bring forward their creative ideas and submit proposals for improving job quality and addressing at least one of the following three key areas:

 Working Conditions and Environment
 Retention Management
 Raising the Attractiveness of Blue Collar Jobs

Eligibility Conditions

Egyptian companies that met thefollowing criteria  were invited to apply:

 • Employing at least 20 employees with social insurance.

• Employing a considerable number of blue collar workers.

• Willing to carry out the project implementation and provide considerable contribution to its successful implementation, whether in cash or in-kind. In-kind contribution includes the use of company buildings, facilities, equipment, personnel, etc.

Jury

A jury composed of diverse and professional experts as well as representatives of the Steering Committee of the

National Employment Pact evaluatedand selected the best project proposals.

Evaluation Criteria and Selection

Project proposals were evaluatedbased on solid criteria in order to ensure transparency of selection and quality of the promoted projects.


Prize

Selected companies receivedfinancial support and technical support for project implementation.
Selected companies got theopportunity to join the National Employment Pact.
The best implemented projectswere showcased - on the local, regional and international levels - as success

     stories of Egyptian companies putting in place important measures to foster job quality.

Companies that successfully implemented the projects participated in a training to further improve job quality and retention management.

“Better Business with Job Quality" Competition in Figures

130 companies participated in the competition launched in July 2012.
14 best project proposals weresuccessfully implemented with the support of the NEP in 2013.
9 different locations in Egypt are represented in the implemented projects.
More than 50% of the projects’direct beneficiaries are blue collar workers (3,000 blue collars)
The selected companies  cover 8different industry types.
